With lower price, Apple TV may now catch on - The Boston Globe

The battle for your living room expands

In all, Apple TV is $99 worth of nice. But nice enough? Most of its features are already available to anybody with a video game console, though not as gracefully packaged. The inability to rent new shows from NBC and CBS, while hardly fatal, could discourage many a couch potato.

And then there’s Google TV, which promises a near-total integration of TV and the Internet. Based on Google’s popular Android software for smartphones, Google TV will let users run Android apps on their TV sets, and view Web and video content at the same time. You could watch a basketball game while reviewing stats and scores from all over the league. Or if you see an interesting video on your Android phone, you can instantly “fling’’ it onto the TV screen.
