"An Israeli company says it’s developed an optical lens and image processing software that’s so powerful it can turn any smartphone into a hyperspectral sensor, potentially allowing cameras to break down the chemical components of almost any object from a distance – without having to collect physical specimens.

One possible application: reducing the instances of baby deaths in China due to fake milk. Unispectral’s camera would be able to provide the chemical fingerprint of the milk to determine if it is genuine or fake, said Ariel Raz, a Unispectral team member. Other applications include remote health monitoring and industrial quality control. Its hyperspectral platform is also suitable for wearable devices, Mr. Raz said."
