Speaking of things Microsoft bootstrapped during Bubble 1.0 that never went away...

Slate helped set the standards for online journalism when it was formed by Microsoft in 1996. The Washington Post Company purchased Slate in 2005. The site, which is now profitable, averages 6.5 million unique visitors a month, according to comScore.

“Slate has become a good business, and I think the Slate Group can expand to be a bigger business,” Mr. Weisberg said.
