For one, VMware’s market dominance is unquestioned. It’s closing in on $2 billion per year in revenue. Meanwhile, Citrix Systems, a rival with arguably the most mature competing software, posted between $3 million and $4 million in server and desktop virtualization software sales during its second quarter, according to a company presentation. Market researcher Gartner has forecast that VMware will hold 86% of the mainstream virtualization software market by the end of this year, leaving Citrix with just 5% and heavyweights such as Microsoft and Oracle with 3% and 1%, respectively.
