WSJ.com - Google Buys Web-Based Word Processor Writely

WSJ.com - Google Buys Web-Based Word Processor Writely: "The Writely program is still in an early stage of development. Upstartle launched a beta test version of the online software in August, and, according to its Web site, has stopped allowing new users to sign up until the product is moved to the Google network.
In an online posting, Google said it hasn't determined how or if Writely's product plans will change.
Google said that it presently has no plans to sell advertising on the Writely site. It said it hopes to continue offering a basic level of word-processing service for free, but that extra features may require a subscription fee and licensing charges will be available for corporations.
The Writely site presently has 'hundreds of thousands' of users. Traffic is anticipated to grow to millions of users, Google said."

Somehow Google c2006 is looking more and more like Netscape c1996 to me -- increasingly chaotic, unfocused, and more obsessed with thwarting Microsoft than with addressing real-world customer requirements.
