Apple News app, overshadowed by gadgets, could be a big deal for media industry | BetaBoston

From an Apple News projection
"In short, Apple is introducing a new problem for media companies and positioning its own app as a solution.

News could actually help Apple on three fronts, according to Ken Doctor, a media analyst who runs the Newsonomics blog. If the app catches on, it will give the company control over users’ mobile news consumption and a slice of the media industry’s advertising pie, while dinging search engine rivals.

“The big winner in this is Apple, which is keeping you in its contained, closed system,” Doctor said. “The enemy here for Apple isn’t publishers — it’s Google. What Google wants is a free and open web so it can serve you search advertising. That’s the major passion play that is playing out here.”"
