Mr Sinofsky said applications would be written based on JavaScript and HTML5 web standards, making it much easier for developers to write programs both for Windows and rival mobile operating systems.

That’s the second piece of good news this week for outside programmers. On Tuesday night, Google executive chairman Eric Schmidt told the same audience that he thought designing for Android phones could eventually be done with HTML5 as well.
