Newsmagazines have struggled in recent years, and U.S. News has been especially troubled, making deep staff cuts and trailing far behind Time and Newsweek in circulation and advertising. Unlike those magazines, U.S. News, owned by the real estate magnate Mortimer B. Zuckerman, is not part of a larger media company with which it can share resources.
