Meanwhile the Norton 2006 suite I renewed (for two years, for $59.99) on a laptop on 2006/01/03 informed me last night that it has expired. My patience with Symantec expired a long time ago; I'll be requesting a full refund and installing the beta of Windows OneCare on the laptop during the weekend.
