Amazon’s Ordering Buttons Get Prime Placement - Digits - WSJ

tbd if this is an inventory clearance tactic

"Shopping’s a hassle. But even on the Web?

Amazon seems to think so. On Wednesday, the company said for the first time it is offering to all of its most devoted customers, Prime members, a thumb-drive-sized device that enables them to push a button to order things like Huggies diapers, Gillette razors and Cottonelle toilet paper.

Known as Dash Buttons, the devices were available in more limited release earlier this year for $5. Now Amazon is sweetening the deal by offering a rebate of $5, good for Amazon purchases, after the first button push. That effectively makes the buttons free, while also ensuring customers come back to Amazon.com to spend more."
