The ability to manage privacy in challenging settings promises to attract increasing attention as federal antiterrorism officials seek to extend wiretapping capabilities to websites like Facebook and Skype. Word of that plan came this week, just before a tragedy at Rutgers University underscored the scope of the issue: An 18-year-old student committed suicide after two classmates surreptitiously videotaped and posted online his sexual encounter with another male.
At the center of the broader societal debate is Boyd, whose views on key issues like online privacy are followed closely by tech companies and policy makers.
