EU Issues Objections to Sun-Oracle Deal - WSJ.com

Not an entirely helpful tone…

The companies said Monday that the European Commission issued a statement of objections regarding the deal, which they said focuses on whether Oracle's takeover of Sun's MySQL database software would reduce competition in the market.

The move doesn't necessarily mean the European Union will reject the deal, but it will delay the transaction since regulators have concluded there is a competitive problem.

Oracle, which now has an opportunity to respond to the EU, said the EU's action "reveals a profound misunderstanding of both database competition and open-source dynamics."

If Oracle can't work out a compromise, there would be a hearing in Europe.
