IBM speeds Java on mainframes | CNET News.com "The zSeries Application Assist Processor (zAAP) is essentially a dedicated processor for Java applications. Java runs on IBM mainframes now, but it does not enjoy dedicated hardware. ZAAP costs $125,000 per microprocessor.
The new products comes on the eve of a celebration IBM will hold at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, Calif., on Wednesday to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the release of the S/360, the computer that put the mainframe on the map. Released in 1964, the S/360 was one of IBM’s most ambitious projects to date. The company invested $5 billion into the project and built five new plants in the process. At the time, IBM’s annual revenue was only $3.2 billion."
Hmm -- how many commodity Wintel/Lintel boxes can be had for $125K?...
