In fact, the embrace of the massive DB2 storage capabilities has led to some speculation that Domino’s native .NSF data store may be on the way out; but Marsh said this is not the case. “.NSF is a more than adequate data store, and some of its characteristics were used to improve DB2,” he said. “We actually needed to make enhancements to DB2 to make it amenable to the Domino development paradigm. For example, we had to add the ability to handle XML data. This wasn’t just a one way street.”
Schwartz agrees and said that the future of .NSF is not a concern. “IBM is a huge company, and there are certain parts of IBM that probably would want to do away with .NSF, but I’m not afraid. There’s no practical way to do it, at least not in the short term,” he said. “On the other hand, there are some people [in IBM] who would love to see .NSF extended, expanded, and built upon. .NSF is still the only data store where the data looks the same on the client and the server.”
